Bring BYX to your campus
Why Expansion Matters
For almost 40 years, Beta Upsilon Chi has been establishing brotherhood and unity among college men based on the common bond of Jesus Christ. Starting at the University of Texas at Austin in 1985, this vision for utilizing fraternity to unite Christian men has spread to over 35 campuses across the nation. Through this journey, two important things have stood out:
- A fraternity designed to glorify God develops young men for a lifetime of Kingdom impact.
- Cultivating brotherhood and unity in Christ amongst college men creates a ripple effect that impacts lives and communities in every corner of the earth.
Because of these personal and generational impacts, we want as many college men as possible to have the opportunity to be shaped and formed by the gift of fraternity rooted in Christ.
Expansion Process
To bring the opportunity of BYX to more men, we need to bring BYX to more campuses. While all opportunities to advance our mission are exciting, stewarding fraternity for Christ requires thoughtful and cautious expansion. Therefore, our expansion process aims to both thoroughly evaluate and comprehensively equip new campuses to preserve the integrity of what BYX stands for.
The phases of Beta Upsilon Chi expansion are as follows:

The Phases of BYX Expansion:

The interested party and the BYX National Staff get to know each other and evaluate the potential for success in working together.
If the conclusion of Phase 1 is that this is the right campus for a BYX chapter, Phase 2 will begin. In this phase, a relationship is formed with the university, and a local BYX culture is built.

A consistently meeting and growing interest group is evaluated to ultimately gain approval from the BYX National Staff and their campus’s administration.
A high-functioning interest group with campus approval receives a weeklong in-person training program that culminates in the formal initiation of a new BYX Colony.

If a colony has exemplified the identity of BYX and consistently grown in excellence over a set period of time, they are formally designated as a Chapter of Beta Upsilon Chi.

Frequently asked questions:
Q: Is my campus right for BYX?
A: While not an exhaustive list of the qualities of a good campus for BYX, there are two variables that are the most foundational. The first is that the campus has an active and engaged Greek culture. The second is that there is a pre-existing Christian community that is open to and excited about something like BYX. However, a conversation with us is ultimately the best way to evaluate your campus.
Q: How long does the expansion process take?
A: There is no set time allotment for starting a chapter. We want you to move at a pace that is manageable for you but also that keeps momentum building. We will work with you step by step and use our experience to keep you on track for a successful founding.
Q: How will I be supported if I want to start BYX at my school?
A: The Beta Upsilon Chi Director of Expansion will work closely with you from the first vision meeting until you become an initiated colony of BYX. We know that founding a fraternity is an exciting and occasionally overwhelming experience, so we provide all the resources, connections, and insights we can to give you the best chance for success. We are also excited to build a relationship with you and help you grow as a man and as a leader throughout the expansion process.
Q: Do I need to find a fraternity house?
A: No. While we review any housing opportunities on a case-by-case basis, new BYX colonies are typically unhoused. We are confident that the bonds of brotherhood and unity in Christ can be forged with or without a physical house.
